摘要：At the time of independence the country was facing many problems like inequalities in income, low levels of employment, regional imbalances in economic development and lack of trained manpower. In this view the public sector in India was set up with the objective of achieving inclusive growth. The main object of this paper is to present a picture of the public sector enterprises in India based on the secondary literature available. Different issues related to the performance of the public sector enterprises is discussed on the backdrop of their contribution to Indian economy. The paper helps in creating an understanding of the role played by public sector enterprises in the economic development of the country.
