摘要:This study is published as the first element of a comprehensive research project. In the course of the research I intend to present the regional history of parliamentary elections of Middle Slovakia and the political career of Members of Parliament from this region. The first stage of this work is to analyze the ethnic character and electoral composition of the counties of this region – Gömör, Kishont, Hont, Zólyom. Dealing with Zólyom County and the town of Besztercebánya, the present study is the opening move of this stage. After having offered a brief survey on shaping of the 19th century economic conditions of the county, I present demographic data. Changes in the number of inhabitants are analyzed at district and village level. Then the trend of the ethnic data between 1880 and 1910 will be examined. The final unit of the study will explore the constituencies of Zólyom County, their structure, ethnic composition and number of electors. As a conclusion, we can state that comparing the data of Zólyom County and the whole country, two well-marked differences can be pointed out: the former nobility had a much smaller part in the county life, and the county had a more agricultural dominated electoral group than the countrywide average.
