  • 摘要:Background: Gastro-esophageal reflux is a normal physiologic reflux experienced intermittently by most people, particularly after eating. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease occurs when the amount of gastric juice that reflux into the esophagus exceeds the normal limit, causing symptoms with or without associated esophageal mucosal injury. There are several independent factors that have a interesting role in causing GERD symptoms but also erosive esphagitis. One of them is BMI (Body mass index) Aim : To find the correlation between symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD),erosive esophagitis and Body Mass index(BMI) Materials and methods A total of 80 patients who presented at the department of Gastro-Enterology at the Military Hospital of Tirana with symptoms of GERD where included and interviewed according to validated RED questionnaire. It included questions regarding GERD symtoms mostly heartburn .All subjects underwent anthropometrics measurement. Body weight was measured to the nearest of 0.1 kg, using a digital scale placed on a flat surface. Body mass index was calculated as the weight divided by the square of height (m): (BMI=weight*height2 (kg/m2) Weight status was determined using the diseases Control Center and Prevention 200 growth curves that define as underweight(BMI ≤5th percentile),normal weight (5th˂BMI˂84th percentile) .Overweight and obese(BMI ≥95th percentile). Every subject underwent a upper endoscopy for the evaluation erosive esophagitis and in each case we made a classification of erosive esophagitis based on Loss A Classification. Results In this study we determine that prevalence of the obesity is (BMI≥30) is 23% while the prevalence of overweight subjects is 27.3%.Esophagitis of grade B and C was present in 25/80(38.7%)of the obese and overweight subjects, also heartburn was present in 55/80(68.7%) of the overweight and obese subjects. Conclusions BMI is a very important independent risk factor in causing GERD and erosive esophagitis. This result support the evaluation of weight reduction as a potential therapy for GERD
