This study examines the peoples perception and their response to gully erosion in Jos South, Plateau State, to achieve this, four out of the nine wards affected by the problem were selected for the study and 150 copies of well structured questionnaires were administered to the residents of the area. The returned questionnaires were analyzed using simple percentages and charts. Also, Landsat ETM image 2014 of Jos South was obtained from the National Centre for Remote Sensing, Jos office and was used to map the gullies in the area. The results showed that though natural parameters such as rainfall, the slope of the area and topography of the area influences the problem, anthropogenic parameters such as mining and deforestation were identified to have profound influence. The result also revealed that majority (47%) of the respondents are highly aware of the gully problem in the area, the peoples demographic and socio-economic status affects their response to the problem, since majority of the respondents earn below 100,000 Nigerian Naira annually. The onset of erosion in the area is fast as (52%) of the respondents indicated, the extent of the gullies in terms of size in hectares in the area range from 3-10m deep, 6-67m wide, 1-6km in length and 20-100 hectares. The people perceived gully erosion as a resource that creates resistance. The government is aware of the problem in the area but is doing little to combat it. The people are aware of some measures of gully control such as san bagging, afforestation basket, water channelization to mention a few. The residents have responded to the problem but their efforts have been inadequate as gully erosion continues to ravage the area. The study concludes that the government should assist the people to combat the problem as it has proved to be beyond the communities effort.
