摘要:The science of “Immunology” originated in the 19thcentury and grass pollens were identified for thefirst time as the likely trigger of seasonal hay feverin the 1870s. Skin allergy testing became anaccepted assessment technique around 1910.Immunoglobulin E (IgE) was identified in the1960s. The first scholarly report of immunotherapyfor allergy appeared by Noon1 and Freeman in 1911in the medical journal, The Lancet. Clinicalattempts to determine the best dose and route forallergy therapy increased dramatically in the 1920sand 1930s.2 The oral route of immunotherapy wassuggested earlier in 1900 by Curtis3 but, the clinicaluse of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for foodswas described in 1969 by David Morris.4 SLIT wasreintroduced in 1970 for inhalant allergens.5Although some patients treated for food, pollen, petdander and mold allergy by SLIT appeared toimprove, the ideal dose, degree of expectedimprovement, and the mechanism of action werenot established, and few studies were published inpeer reviewed journals until the 1990s. Generally, sufficient research evidence on the effectivenessand mechanism of immunotherapy began toaccumulate in the last 15 years of the 20th century.
