摘要:Australia’s history is punctuated by demands for the implementation of a system of universal compulsory military training. Two distinct groups lend impetus to National Service advocacy. On one hand are individuals and organisations that are convinced of the merits of universal compulsory military service as a means of increasing Australia’s defence capacity. On the other hand, are people who appear to be more concerned with the instillation in Australian youth of social values commonly associated with military service.Australia’s military leaders have traditionally been reluctant to endorse National Service because it absorbs the scarce resources of the Permanent Military Forces. However, the persistence of National Service proponents has ensured that National Service remains as much a focus of passionate debate today as it was during the 1950s, when a system of universal military training was introduced upon the pretext of preparing the nation for war.
