  • 摘要:This study investigated the use of students’ mother tongue, the Farsilanguage (L1), in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes at an Iranian medicaluniversity, as well as the attitudes of Iranian ESP instructors and ESP studentstowards employing Farsi in ESP classrooms. Data was collected by means ofclassroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and a questionnaire, with 100ESP students and two ESP instructors participating in the study. The results revealedthat ESP instructors used Farsi in specific situations such as explaining grammaticalpoints and new words, managing classroom, explaining instructions, and checkingstudents’ understanding. With respect to the second aim of the study, the findings ofthe semi-structured interviews showed that both instructors held positive attitudestowards employing Farsi in the ESP classroom. Similarly, the results of thequestionnaire indicated that ESP students had positive attitudes towards the use ofFarsi in their ESP classes.
