摘要:This study aims at exploring EFL students’ levels of burnout across two different contexts of English learning in Iran, namely, language institutes and universities. It also seeks to examine the role of gender and educational level in student burnout. To measure burnout, the study employed the Persian version of the ' Maslach Burnout Inventory (Student Survey)/ MBISS' instrument designed by Schaufeli, Martinez, Marques-Pinto, Salanova, and Bakker (2002) which was translated and validated by Rostami, Abedi, Schaufeli, Ahmadi, and Sadeghi (2014). The scale measures three constructs; emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and academic inefficacy. The results indicated that there are significant differences in burnout dimensions across the two contexts. In particular, it was found that students learning English in language institutes experienced higher levels of burnout than university students. It was also revealed that there is a significant relationship between gender and student burnout. In other words, male students felt burned out more than female learners. In terms of educational level, significant differences were found between undergraduate and postgraduate students.
