摘要:A good writing is one that is cohesive and coherent. Cohesion and coherence areessential textual components to create organized and comprehensiveness of the texts. To createcohesive and coherent texts, Theme and Rheme play an important role. This qualitative researchfocuses on analyzing types of Theme applied by the students of English Department of TidarUniversity and the tendency of the students in applying the types of Theme. The unit analyses ofthis research are clauses of analytical exposition texts written by the third semester students ofEnglish Department, Tidar University. Based on Gerot and Wignell’s theory (1994), it can befound that the types of Theme in the students’ analytical exposition texts are unmarked andmarked topical, textual and interpersonal Theme. Among the above types of Theme, unmarkedtopical Themes are mostly used by the students in their analytical exposition texts. It is55.11%. The next type is textual Theme (36.89%), marked topical Theme (5.78%) andinterpersonal Theme (2.22%)
