摘要：Apparemment versé en anthropologie linguistique, Golding met en scène dans son second roman la célèbre rencontre des hommes de Neandertal et des Homo sapiens.Mais, dans cette reconstruction de l’histoire du langage de ses prémices jusqu’à son utilisation comme outil, la voix de l’historien ne se fait jamais entendre: le langage raconte lui-même sa propre histoire.Les métaphores utilisées pour décrire la vision néandertalienne sont à prendre littéralement parce que c’est précisément la façon dont ils appréhendent le monde, sous forme d’images immédiates.Inversement la description de l’autre tribu a des implications métaphoriques que seul un membre appartenant à l’ordre symbolique peut percevoir.Au cœur de cette reconstruction se trouve quelque ironie tragique: en altérant nos schémas interprétatifs traditionnels et en jouant sur l’indétermination et le malentendu, comme seule façon d’approcher le monde peu familier des hommes de Neandertal, Golding condamne inévitablement le mode communicatif transparent de la tribu primitive.
其他摘要：Apparently familiar with linguistic anthropology, Golding stages in his second novel the meeting of two groups of Hominidae we will conveniently call Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. But in this reconstruction of linguistic history from the beginnings of language to its crafty use as a linguistic tool, the voice of the historian is never heard: language narrates itself. The metaphors used to describe the Neanderthal’s vision are to be taken literally, for this is precisely how they perceive the world, in an immediate picture-like way. Conversely, the description of the other tribe has metaphorical implications that only a member of a symbolical order can perceive. At the heart of this reconstruction lies some tragical irony: in distorting our usual interpretative schemas and working on indeterminacy and misinterpretation as the only way to approach the unfamiliar Neanderthal world, Golding irrevocably condemns the transparent picture-like communicative mode of the Neanderthals.
