摘要:This paper specifies the deficiencies ofthe present system of projectionsavailable for global data presentations, and demonstrates the need for a newprojection suitable for the portrayal ofglobal environmental data. As the answerto present needs, created by advancementsin space and computer technologies, thenovel general purpose map projection isproposed for use as the base cartographicrepresentation for Global GIS output. Itis a minimum error cartographicrepresentation of the globe, whichsimultaneusly minimizes the distortions inequal-area, conformal, and equidistantproperties of the resultant world map.Several advantages of this Tri-OptimalWorld Projection are described, which makeit the best candidate for use as thegeneral coordinate system for Global GISdisplays and analysis. The most importantfeatures of this new projection are:minimum error property; best compromiseamong equal-area, conformal, andequidistant projections; contiguousdisplay of the entire Earth's surface;special shape of polar regions whichcreates an illusion of the perspectiveview of the globe; and simple mappingequations.
