摘要:Recent colonization of Brazilian Amazonia has provoked concern over losses oflarge areas of primary forest and the difficult _prospect of establishment ofsustainable agricultural systems in this region. This study examines land usepatterns within a recently colonized region of Rondonia, southeastern Brazil. Onsitedata were gathered by individual site surveys and interviews with individualcolonists. Multlsp'ectral SPOT scenes (June, 1986; July, 1991) of area wereexamined to identify each site, and the pattern of crops and land use within eachsite. The distinction between forested and non-forested regions is clear. Areascleared for pasture, and the initial stages of succession to secondary forest arelikely to be distinguished with some refiability. However, reliable identification ofareas planted to coffee, and especially to crops such as rice, maize, and beans isproblematical, largely because of variability within fields and the similar spectralresponses, at least during the season we examined. Comparison of SPOTmultispectral scenes 1986-1991 reveals that, within this interval, vegetativesuccession in abandoned pasture acquires a spectral response very similar to thatof primar¥ forest. Thus, after an interval estimated to be perhaps eight years orso, identi ication of regrown areas using this method likely to be very difficult atbest.
