For the Turkish people, the Çanakkale front is the bloodiest front of World War I. For this reason, the matter of building a monument in Turkey worthy of the Çanakkale martyrs is always a topical issue. Herein, well-kept graves of the martyrs and magnificent monuments belonging to the English and to the French and their colonies on the Çanakkale battlefield also played a key role. The first important step of the building process for the monument was the project competition which started in 1944. Exactly ten years later, a ground-breaking ceremony was held. Meanwhile, a Construction Committee was formed, and fund-raising efforts began. However, the help of the people was cut when some misappropriations were discovered during the building. As this threatened to halt construction on the monument, the Milliyet Newspaper held an aid campaign for 58 days on January 20, 1958. The campaign exceeded its goal of collecting nine hundred thousand lira, garnering 1.338.144,50 lira were collected through fifty grants by the end of the 58th day. All segments of society participated in the aid campaign intensively. This aid campaign regenerated again the long-awaited understanding of national unity and solidarity in Turkey and it made possible the completion of the monument building.
