摘要:Biodiesel developed from non-edibleoils promise to be a very important prospectivealternative fuel for diesel engines in India. Vegetable oilhas slightly lower calorific value than diesel fuel. Thiscan be attributed to presence of oxygen in the moleculesof vegetable oils. Vegetable oil has cetane numberabout 35 to 40 depending upon the composition whereas diesel fuel has a cetane number around 45. Certainfunctional groups and poor volatility is responsible fortheir comparatively low cetane number. Increasing thecetane number of diesel fuel, either by loweringaromatic content of the fuel through hydro treating andby addition of chemical cetane improvers, is a costeffectiveoption to reduce diesel engine emissions.Jatropha - curcas as a non-edible methyl ester biodieselfuel source is used to run single cylinder, four-strokediesel engine. An attempt has been made in this paper togive an overview by comparing its performance andemission characteristics with diesel – biodiesel blend byadding with cetane improver & diesel – biodiesel blendof B50. The blends of Jatropha methyl ester and dieselwith EHN could be successfully used in diesel engineswithout any modification with acceptable performanceand better emissions.
