摘要:We consider the design optimization of aclosed coil helical spring where the objective is to minimizethe weight of the spring. The present situation in the designof machine elements includes the minimization of weight ofthe individual components in order to reduce the overallweight of the machine elements. It saves both energy andcost involved. The design of mechanical devices imposesthe dimensioning of number of common components likeshaft, gear, cams etc. Helical compression springs are oneamong those common components in use for manufacturingof machines. In the present study, minimization of weight ofa closed coil helical spring has been investigated. There is ascope for efficient algorithms for the design optimization ofmachine elements. In recent years, much attention is givento heuristics and search techniques. To solve this problem,we propose Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA) andParticle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to evolve best values ofdesign variables in order to reduce the weight of the spring.The proposed methods are tested and the performances areevaluated. The computational results show that the proposedalgorithms are very competitive for the optimal design of aclosed coil helical spring.
