摘要:Biodiesel derived from feed stock of crude vegetable oils are renewable, biodegradable, provide energysecurity and foreign exchange savings besides addressing environmental concerns and socio–economic issues.However drawbacks associated with biodiesel of moderate viscosity and low volatilitywhich causecombustionproblems in CI engines, call for engine with hot combustion chamber, for burning biodiesel effectively.Investigations were carried out to evaluate the performance and determine exhaust emissions with low heat rejectioncombustion chamber with cotton seed biodiesel. It consisted of an air gap insulated piston with superni (an alloy ofnickel) crown, an air gap insulated liner with superni insert and ceramic coated cylinder head with cotton seedbiodieselwith varied injector opening pressure.Performance parameters of brake thermal efficiency, brake specificenergy consumption, exhaust gas temperature, coolant load and volumetric efficiency were determined at full loadoperation of the engine. Exhaust emissions of particulate emissions and nitrogen oxide were measured at full loadoperation of the engine. The optimum injection timing with conventional engine (CE) was 31o bTDC (before top deadcentre),while it was 28o bTDC for engine with LHR combustion chamber with biodiesel. Comparative studies weremade for engine with LHR combustion chamber and CE at manufacturer’s recommended injection timing (27obTDC)and optimum injection timing with biodiesel operation.Engine with LHR combustion chamber with biodiesel showedimproved performance at 27obTDCand at optimum injection timing over CE. Particulate emissions reduced withbiodiesel operation on LHR engine.
