  • 摘要:For planning any road development or improvement project and management schemes, traffic datacollection and projections thereof of traffic volumes are its basic requirements. Traffic data forms an integral part in thescience of descriptive national economics and such knowledge is essential in drawing up a rational transport policy formovement of passengers and goods by both government and the private sectors. In order to analyse the traffic data, thedata collection is the very first step of this approach. It is essential to know the magnitude of traffic data required or tobe collected, which will then determine its quality and type of vehicle classification to be adopted. Traffic countingfalls in two main categories, namely; manual counts and automatic counts. There is no distinct difference between thetwo methods however, the economic use or selection of an appropriate method of traffic counting is a function of thelevel of traffic flow and the required data quality. The multimodal analysis of the data collected includes the trafficvolume study which identifies the peak flow of traffic, road use pattern which helps in identifying the pattern of theroad use with respect to time and other roads, calculation of AADT, capacity and level of service describingquantitative and qualitative traffic flow characteristics, etc.
