  • 摘要:Since advent of civilization varioustypes of cementitous materials have been used forconstructiuon practices. The arrival of OrdinaryPortland Cement (OPC) changed the constructionactivities completely. However, because of severaldrawbacks associated with properties of cement andmanufactured building materials usinf OPC as wellas the cost factor attempts one mode to utilize othermaterials for economical constructions and improvedmortar and concrete characteristics. Also, severalwaste materials are generated in huge quantities bydifferent industrial activities. Now attempts weremade to utilize these waste materials or industrialbyproducts in construction activities to solve theenvironmental pollution problems, and safer andeconomical construction. Silica fume is one suchindustrial by product which is being used andexperimented upon to obtain a stronger and durableconcrete. It is one of the pozzolonas having very largesurface area which results in better and uniformutilization of calcium hydroxide released duringhydration of OPC. Also, because of its very fine size itact as filler material between the cement gell grains.This paper presents a review of silica fume utilizationin concrete production and its effect on the concrete.
