摘要:Franz Kafka and Edgar Allen Poe are some of the famous writers who employed different approaches toengage their chosen audiences. From a postmodernist perspective, both Franz Kafka and Edgar Allen Poe are regardedas (de)constructors of existing style of the short story genre. However, what is most interesting is that both of themhave employed similar tactics of sacrificing their characters at the conclusion of their stories. In the short story TheMetamorphosis the insect like protagonist and in “The Black Cat” the death of the cat are parallel examples of theapproaches that the two famous authors employ to portray the evil and nightmarish life that the world presents. Inessence, both Kafka and Poe appear fascinated with the un-sensational story telling that uses the ultimate demise of thecharacters as proof that the world is full of untold evil. While either of the two have unique approaches to their writing, what is evident is that they exploit the choice of words, sentence structure, and writing style to question the fate of theprotagonists in their stories. This paper examines Franz Kafka and Edgar Allen Poe’s writing from a comparativeperspective.
