  • 摘要:The Russian National Library in St. Petersburg holds a unique manuscript version of thefamous tale of Ahasverus, the “Wandering Jew”. This copy was probably made in the lateseventeenth or early eighteenth century, whereas the translation itself – according to a dateindicated at the beginning of the copy – was produced in 1663, most probably by aprofessional translator at the Diplomatic Chancery in Moscow. The text is preserved in avolume previously owned by P. M. Stroev (the modern shelfmark is Pogodin 1565). TheAhasverus manuscript was mentioned by A. I. Sobolevskij in 1903, and the text was editedfor the first time by V. P. Adrianova in 1915 – an edition unfortunately marred by a numberof serious mistakes. Therefore we decided to publish a new transcription. One of theimportant questions discussed is, obviously, the source language for the Russian translation.Whereas V. P. Adrianova was convinced that the original was a German “brochure” (or, incurrent terminology, a “pamphlet”), we think that a Dutch original is at least as likely as aGerman one. For this reason – and also because Dutch versions are not as easily accessible asGerman ones – we have transcribed a Dutch version of the legend (probably printed in 1603)and appended it to our article. While the direct source of the translation appears to be lost, we do not, however, expect it to have been a pamphlet, as Adrianova would have it, but rather a lengthy printed newspaper article (that was itself abbreviated from a pamphlet version).
