摘要:In the mid-nineteenth century, mountain sanatoriums became specialized centres in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Following this European trend, some Portuguese doctors and public figures put efforts into building a mountain sanatorium. The place chosen was the Serra da Estrela, the highest point in mainland Portugal, for its climatic conditions, geographical setting, humidity and lack of social activity. Seve- ral experiments were undertaken with patients, who voluntarily settled in the mountains, considered the Por- tuguese Switzerland, seeking to overcome the malady of the century. In the village of Poio Negro, a weather station was installed and several cabins were built to house the first patients, but a variety of difficulties diver- ted attention to the city of Guarda. This article aims to identify the doctrines underlying medical treatment for life in the mountains and the medi- cal reasons behind the need to build a sanatorium in the Serra da Estrela. We also intend to make a retrospec- tive summar y of the first therapeutic experiences in the mountain landscape until the construction of the first sanatorium. The research is based on documentation such as medical theses, medical articles and some refe- rence monographs.
