摘要:Through multidimensional and spatial approaches, this article has analyzed a set of 16 variables related to 1,155 cities in the South region of Brazil, obtained mostly at the IBGE (2001). The goal is to examine the different levels of existing intra- and inter-state development. We have verified, by means of fuzzy cluster analysis, that, among other results, less developed cities tend to be located farther from their state’s capital cities, as well as that the developed cities have a smaller proportion of residents born in these same cities and that there are several “poverty corridors”, “islands of prosperity” and “non-development windows”, responsible for the spatial configuration of the South region as a whole and its States in particular.
