摘要:The R-1: Non-Verbal Intelligence Test is a Brazilian test to measure general intelligence. It was created to assess future drivers. However, the last published test manual does not have standards for illiterate adults. This study was designed to establish norms in the R-1 Test among illiterate adults and to present an analysis of frequencies of success for each item. The sample was composed by 151 adults, aged from 16 to 77 years of both sexes, enrolled in literacy courses in São Paulo city. The R-1 Test was collectively administered, with no time limits. Results indicated that illiterate adult’s means were lower than more educated people, confirming that education influences intelligence test scores, as it was suggested by literature. A comparison of the relative frequencies of passing individual items between the illiterate group and the more educated sample, revealed that items presented the same relative difficulty to both, although success percentages were lower for the illiterate group. Keywords: R-1 Test; illiteracy; intellectual development; intelligence tests.
