摘要：The archives of the universities have in their care essential documents created in the course of teaching, research and extension. These documents are witness to the memory of the institution and may be a research resource for students, teachers, historians, researchers, and others. In this sense, the archive is custodian of the university institutional memory. This article aims to reflect on the archives of Brazilian universities and their role in the preservation of documentary heritage and promoting the memory of the institution. In this sense, we sought to review the main authors who discuss the topic as well as current actions on behalf of the university archives.
