摘要：Port activities directly impact the environment. The implementation of the Açu Port Complex will promote profound changes, not only on local environment, but also on the surrounding communities, particularly artisanal fishermen. The data collected for this study was obtained through questionnaires and interviews, as well as analysis of the conflicts between artisan fishing and the Açu Port Complex enterprise, in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The study proved that the selected area is used for artisan fishing and the restriction of this location resulted in potential conflict between the port implementation and fishing activities. Thus, the study identified the need for participatory planning in order to build a well structured action plan, such as a Port Environmental Agenda, and to promote sustainability of the port business along with minimization of conflicts.
