摘要:The development of a country or a region is necessarily accompanied by an increase in energy consumption. The Upper Paraguay River Basin is no exception to this rule and the energy demand has been growing in recent years. The solution adopted to supply the region was the installation of hydroelectric and thermoelectric plants. Both forms of energy generation have environmental consequences, but the dams are icons in terms of impacts and for this reason they are targeted by this approach, which aims to make a preliminary assessment of the effects of these dams on the river discharge and sediment transport in basin. To achieve this objective we have used data available from dams in operation and design, besides fluvial discharge data and concentration of sediment available for the basin. In 2010 there were 26 hydroelectric plants in operation and 96 others already licensed. When completed, will influence 44% of affluent discharge plateau and will manage 52% of the sediments tributary to the Pantanal. Such a deduction could offset the increased transportation provided by the occupation of the basin, but as for its intensity, can promote the degradation of the Pantanal. The Cuiabá River will be most affected by the discharge control and rivers with alluvial fans will be most affected by the cut of bed sediments. Preliminary data indicate the need to monitor the transport of bed load in the basin.
