摘要：Este trabalho procura discutir quais as possibilidades da fotografia enquanto documento histórico. Entendendo a linguagem fotográfica como produto das relações históricas dos homens com o meio e dos homens com os homens, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo discutir a linguagem fotográfica produzida pelo Serviço de Proteção ao Índio e seus vínculos com a política indianista do órgão, investigando a questão teórico-metodológica da fotografia enquanto fonte histórica. Um documento que possui as marcas de seu tempo e de seus autores - personagens reais e contextualizados em seu período - e, em especial, na qualidade de vetores visuais de determinados acontecimentos históricos, tendo como objeto de análise parte da produção fotográfica do alemão Heinz Foerthmann, um dos principais fotógrafos do SPI na década de 40.

It is understanding the photographic language as product of the relationships historical of the men with the middle and of the men with the men, the present work has as objective discusses the photographic language produced by the Service of Protection to the Indian and their bonds with the politics indian of the organ, investigating the theoretical-methodological subject of the picture while historical source. A document that possesses the marks of his time and of their authors – characters real insides of their period - and, in special, in the quality of visual vectors of certain historical events, as well as analysis object part of the photographic production of the German Heinz Foerthmann, one of the main photographers of the SPI in the 40's .
