摘要:Although the literature acknowledges the family`s role in providing an emotional environment that contributes to the development and maintenance of childhood obesity, most studies of this nature were restricted mainly to the maternal role and function in this context, neglecting the value of the father in the process. Aiming to fill this gap, this study intended to understand the psychodynamics of fathers of obese children and its influence on the exercise of paternity in order to expand the knowledge of the pathology underlying this emotional process, as experienced in the family relationship. Five married men participated in the study, aged between 32 and 44 years, with average socioeconomic level. Some psychological evaluations were made through interviews, Human Figure Drawing and Thematic Apperception Test; the results were analyzed according to a psychoanalytic approach. The fathers presented problems when in contact with their own aggressiveness, no admission of impulsivity, use of inflexible defenses and high levels of requirement related to the children. The exercise of parenthood was more linked to their physical supplies than to their affection, which could contribute for the children to also relate with objects concretely (food intake).
