摘要:After provoking great expectations in the 1980s, social movements mysteriously disappeared from academic debate in the 1990s. In this paper we focus on some of the factors involved in this apparent disappearance, in particular the changes in the analytic lens used in the literature, which shifted focus onto other social actors and, in doing so, hid social movements from view. The movements, however, continued to demonstrate considerable vitality in the 90s. Based on unique empirical findings, produced by means of network analysis and based on a survey undertaken in the city of São Paulo in 2002 with 202 actors in civil society, this paper argues that social movements continue to be an important protagonist in the field of collective action; however, today they share the field with new protagonists which we call “coordinators”. These new actors were formed during the 1990s by other civil society actors. Key-words: social movements, networks, NGOs.
