摘要：Resumo O presente trabalho teve como objetivo gerar informações da comunidade estabelecida em Assentamento Rural na área da antiga Fazenda Engenho Novo – Município de São Gonçalo – RJ, de forma a despertá-la para a reflexão conjunta sobre sua realidade e fortalecer a sociabilidade comunitária para definição, planejamento e execução de ações que visem potencializar os aspectos positivos e superar os negativos identificados. Baseando-se em conceito e ferramentas do Diagnóstico Rural Participativo, foram realizadas reuniões, caminhadas e entrevistas. No processo de formação, o fortalecimento da sociabilidade comunitária e atuação do poder público foram inexpressivos. Com infra-estrutura básica ineficiente, de posse de terras degradadas por séculos de manejo inadequado e sem apoio técnico, a cultura agrícola aos poucos se desgasta. No entanto ainda é existente, em práticas de subsistência com comercialização de excedentes. Sendo esta uma das poucas áreas contínuas do município agricultável e passível de recuperação ambiental para manutenção de áreas florestadas, fazem-se necessárias políticas públicas para o desenvolvimento socioeconômico e ambiental local. Social-economic and enviromental diagnostic of the resident comunity in the old area of Fazenda Engenho Novo – São Gonçalo - RJ Abstract The present work has the objective of generating informations of the comunity stablished in Rural settlemente in the area of the old Fazenda Engenho Novo - São Gonçalo district, Rio de Janeiro, as a way to bring up a reflection about its reality and strengthen the comunitary sociability to define, plan and execute the actions that will potencialize the positive aspects and overcome the negative aspects observed. Basing the actions in concepts and tools of the participatory rural appraisal, meetings were organized, and interviews with the families were done. The results show that in its formation process, the strengh of the comunity and the action of the public power were none. With an ineficient and basic infrastructure, already degradated soils by centuries of bad manegement and without any support, the agriculture slowly wares out. But it still exists, in subsistence practices, with the comercalization of the excess. Considering this, one of the few unbroken agronomic areas of the district and it´s enviroment recuparation possibility, in order to mantein the forest areas, public actions are necessary for social-economic and enviroment development.
