This book could serve as an example to those thinking about writing
a history of their urban community. Although it has the historical
advantage of being established as an Oblate mission in 1875, it still
follows through with the events that carry the reader to the present
day. Schools, hospitals, retail businesses, banks (and bank robbers),
and residences all receive their share of attention. The book also
traces the area from a relatively isolated community to one that has
become inner city.
The photographs are fabulous. The organizers have rounded up
pictures of just about every aspects of community life, as well as
portraits of the men and women who helped create the Cliff
Bungalow--Mission area. In addition, the story of the Catholic presence
in the area is well told.
