Foreword/Avant-propos.

Krull, Catherine

It was with great satisfaction that the editorial team finalized this issue and sent it to the press, as it reflects and further contributes to current directions in LAC scholarship. As well as including some excellent reviews on a selection of recent books and two stimulating review essays, Issue 73 comprises a diverse array of cogently argued analyses of topical issues pertaining to various Latin American and Caribbean regions, including the contributions of exiled Chilean painter Vivian Scheihing; Cold War politics, musical representations, and regionalist sentiment in Magallanes, Chile; the anti-crime "Axel Blumberg Crusade for the Lives of our Children" and the moralization of politics in Argentina; fiestas and rituals of the Faxinalense people in Brazil; the place of historical narratives in Cuban political culture; and slave-mercantile capital as an explanatory theoretical context for modern slavery.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Dr. Andrea Moraes (Ryerson University) who has generously agreed to assist us with the editing of Portuguese articles. Prior to coming to Ryerson in 2008, Andrea worked as coordinator for the Sister Watersheds project (Capacity Building for Water Management in Sao Paulo, Brazil) at York University's Faculty of Environmental Studies. Her interests are Brazil; feminism; gender and development in the developing world; and public participation on water and food security.

As always, I am indebted to our dedicated and talented editorial team. This issue, as did the past few issues, reflects their professionalism and hard work. I would also like to extend our appreciation to the scholars who reviewed articles for this issue. Their expertise and insightful comments have contributed to producing a vibrant and thought-provoking issue. We continue to be committed to diversifying the disciplines and languages represented in the CJLACS. As such, a concerted effort is being made to increase the participation of scholars from outside Canada, especially from Latin American and the Caribbean, in terms of being more involved in the review process and in the submission of scholarly papers and book reviews. I believe that all of those involved in this journal, either in its production or in utilizing it to further their scholarship, should take pride in supporting such a distinct journal; it is the only scholarly publication of its kind in Canada--producing work in four different languages.

I am very pleased to feature the artwork Hopingfor the Best by the artist Blanca E. Canales on the cover of this issue. Born in 1965 in Monterrey, Mexico, Blanca has a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Monterrey and is a professional painter with over 30 years of experience in several techniques such as pencil, oil, dry pastel, acrylic, and wax. Until 2004 she had her own art studio in Monterrey, often participated in group expositions, and was a member of the Artistic Painters Association of Monterrey. Blanca moved to Canada in 2004; in addition to continuing her profession as an artist, she has been teaching art classes for young children and adults, and she has implemented successful art programs with two different school boards. She participated in the Art Show "Women in the Arts" sponsored by the Canadian Federation of University Women in 2009. We are indeed fortunate to be able to reproduce and feature Blanca Canales' art on the front cover of this issue.
