Foreword / Avant-propos.

Krull, Catherine

It is with great pleasure that I have assumed the editorship of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. With the support of the Editorial Board, my goal is to continue to maintain the high standards of the journal, more especially to publish the work of established scholars and gifted junior academics and graduate students who study in our important fields. However, an editor cannot accomplish such an endeavour alone--it takes a team of skilled and dedicated people to produce first-rate issues. In this regard, I have established an editorial team of Latin American and Caribbean scholars representing a range of geographical areas, the languages spoken and written in the region, and constituting a wide range of fields of academic endeavour. Current members include Dr. Melanie Newton (University of Toronto), Dr. Cynthia Wright (York University), Dr. Candace Johnson (Guelph University), and Dr. Alex Da Costa (Queen's University). I have also appointed Dr. Da Costa as our Portuguese Editor. These individuals, despite busy schedules, have worked tirelessly on setting in place structures and procedures that will enhance the efficiency of the journal. For example, over the past few months, we have been creating comprehensive data files so that we have a central archive of past submissions and a central working file to document the activity on current submissions; we have also made substantive modifications in the submission/review process, now done electronically. The value of the editorial team's efforts has been immeasurable.

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Tanya Basok (University of Windsor), who has generously agreed to serve as Book Review Editor, and to Jaela Baxter (Queen's University), who we recently hired as Editorial Assistant--their proficiency and steadfastness is already noticeable and deeply appreciated. We are also indebted to Isabelle Plessis (University of British Columbia), who has volunteered to assist us with French correspondence. And as with any journal, the efforts by members of the Editorial Board are critical to its success. We are fortunate to have an active board--their input is fundamental to our success. In this context, it was also a great pleasure recently to appoint Dr. Juanita De Barros (Department of History, McMaster University) to the Editorial Board.

I would be amiss not to express my gratitude to Dr. Amitava Chowdhury (Queen's University), the Managing Editor--his expertise, patience, and infinite support has made the recent transition in editors much smoother than it would otherwise have been. The journal is indeed fortunate to have someone as assiduous and dedicated to its success.

The above-mentioned individuals have played and will continue to play an integral role in terms of moving this journal forward and strengthening its academic vigour and efficiency. I look forward to working with them. And one cannot speak of the journal's strengths without acknowledging the efforts of the past editor, Dr. Victor Armony. His success in securing SSHRC funding and enlisting the journal in some of the major citation indexes, and his proficiency and dedication to the journal significantly advanced its international profile. We are grateful to him for all he has done. I also extend our gratitude and best wishes to Viviana Patroni, who has had to step down as book review editor; we have been fortunate to have her.

The articles in this issue represent a variety of disciplines that study Latin America and the Caribbean's past and present, and they provide diverse methodological approaches and multiple analytical frameworks. A range of international scholars represent different disciplines--history, international relations, development studies, Latin-American Studies, sociology, politics, arts, and applied social science. They assess, among other important issues, the evolution of the deeply conflicted political left in Peru; changing patterns of Canadian-Latin American/Caribbean municipal ties; Cuba's sport-based internationalism; sexuality in Jamaica's constitutional reform process; cultural meanings of family life and couple relationships in Mexico; and the "othering" process in Bolivia/Chile bilateral relations.

I would like to thank the individuals who agreed to review papers for this issue; their expertise, insightful comments, and suggestions have contributed to a stronger publication. I am also very pleased to feature the art Serie CITY by Jose Armando Medina Sanabia on the front cover of this issue. I appreciate Medina's generosity in allowing us to reproduce it. His work recently received honourable mention at the Biennale internationale d'estampe contemporain de Trois-Rivieres (Quebec). Medina's work will be featured in the art exhibition "Between Indigeneity and the Transnational: Place and Mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean," curated by Maria del Carmen Suescun Pozas, opening at CALACS Congress 2012 in Kelowna. Also featured in this exhibition will be the work of artist Daniel Zafra, which will appear on the cover of issue 72.

L'oeuvre de Medina sera aussi representee dans l'exposition d'art << Between Indigeneity and the Transnational : Place and Mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean >>, organisee par la curatrice Maria del Carmen Suscun Pozas.
