Look inside a classroom back in senior school, a teacher you admire is hassling your cool. There's chalk-dust on his fingers, he's needling your pride, he's still talking to you in the school-house inside. Breathe a little slower, let the planet be, open up your heartlands, let the spirit free, And dance, dance, dance till the vision fades, dance through inner space in the arms of the shades. 4 Can't you see within you a white-robed nun, mothering an orphan in a crowded slum. Can't you see the prophets flashing their eyes, angered by the carbon choking the skies. Can't you feel within you the love of a friend, there to walk beside you right to the end. Let his love transform you, tell him your pain, let his love redeem you deep in your brain. Breathe a little slower, et the planet be, open up your heartlands let the spirit free, And dance, dance, dance till the vision fades, dance through inner space in the arms of the shades.

Dancing in the Arms of the Shades
a song-poem for the guitar

   1

   When you're feeling lonesome
   don't try to hide,
   try to let the feeling
   be your guide.

   Follow where it leads you
   when you're full of sighs,
   turn from your computer,
   close your eyes.

   Deep space dark within you
   that's what you'll see,
   breathe a little slower
   let the planet be.

   Let yourself drift over
   the great divide,
   let yourself discover
   the world inside.

   2

   Leave behind your body,
   travel inner space,
   wait until the shades emerge
   face after face.

   Can't you see your father
   standing at the door,
   you're back home in childhood
   playing on the floor.

   He looks so tired and worried
   from the daily grind,
   he still bends and hugs you
   deep in your mind.

   Can't you see your mother
   sitting by your bed,
   she still calms a nightmare
   deep in your head

   Breathe a little slower,
   let the planet be,
   open up your heartlands
   let the spirit free

   And dance, dance, dance
   till the vision fades,
   dance through inner space
   in the arms of the shades.

   3

   Breathe inside a silence,
   breathe into a calm,
   see along a passage
   one who did you harm.

   Take him by the elbow
   show him to the door,
   tell him, I forgive you,
   trouble me no more.

   Look inside a classroom
   back in senior school,
   a teacher you admire
   is hassling your cool.

   There's chalk-dust on his fingers,
   he's needling your pride,
   he's still talking to you
   in the school-house inside.

   Breathe a little slower,
   let the planet be,
   open up your heartlands,
   let the spirit free,

   And dance, dance, dance
   till the vision fades,
   dance through inner space
   in the arms of the shades.

   4

   Can't you see within you
   a white-robed nun,
   mothering an orphan
   in a crowded slum.

   Can't you see the prophets
   flashing their eyes,
   angered by the carbon
   choking the skies.

   Can't you feel within you
   the love of a friend,
   there to walk beside you
   right to the end.

   Let his love transform you,
   tell him your pain,
   let his love redeem you
   deep in your brain.

   Breathe a little slower,
   et the planet be,
   open up your heartlands
   let the spirit free,

   And dance, dance, dance
   till the vision fades,
   dance through inner space
   in the arms of the shades.
