Of all the human resource management functions, performance management has a special place ever since it is a strong determinant of organizational excellence. Performance management as a distinct discipline is gaining ground slowly but firmly. Performance management as a concept and Practice has substantive potential to fulfill business demands of an organization by integrating its growth with motivational needs of human resource.

This book attempts to capture the comprehensive picture of performance management from a practitioners' perspective and combines sound theoretical concepts with real world organizational experience. The book which is under review is spread over five parts with rich review of literature.

Ten chapters in Part-A precisely deal with the conceptual framework of performance management in a descriptive manner. In this part the author indicates how good performance of people provides competitive advantage to a firm over other organizations.

In different chapters of part-B ,the author has discussed various dimensions such as Managing Performance management system and Process, Philosophy behind performance management, Performance Planning and and Managing organizational performance. Concept, Principles, Objectives and Importance of Performance appraisal are also discussed in this part. This part explores the causal relationship between various human dimensions and performance management and appraisal system.

Part C focuses on the applications of performance management and appraisal system in the organizational context. All the topics such as Types, approaches, sources, process and methods of performance appraisal is being discussed at length. Besides it, Common rating errors, Performance appraisal interview, feedback and counseling, performance management documentation, Performance measurement for shareholder value creation, Ethical and legal issues in performance appraisal are also taken up by the author in this part.

To support the theory, relevant cases are given in Part-D which is a unique feature of the book. The cases help sharpening the managerial and analytical skills of the students and equipping them with practical aspects of a manager's job.

Part-E provides insight into how real world organizations manage and appraise the performance of employees, managers and CEO's. Moreover, different P.A forms are given in this part so that students can gain practical knowledge about designing the P.A form. "The Final Thought is devoted to the summarization of entire text, with a brief reference to futuristic possibilities.

The book portrays the author's indepth grasp of the subject, narrated in lucid style and simple language, keeping reader glued throughout. The book's style of presenting the concept of Performance appraisal and management widens the scope of its readership from management community to most people who have interest in the subject.
