This is the third Women in Welfare Education Journal. We originally
had envisioned that the journal would be published each year. However we
now realise that it is more realistic for it to be produced every two
years.
This edition of the journal has more articles than the previous
journals, with six refereed articles, a research article and two book
reviews. Its contents once again reflect the diversity of womens'
research and writing. There are three articles on different aspects of
social work and welfare education (field education, ethics and a
critique of feminists' approaches to adult education); one on the
complexities in identity formation of a young women in state care and
two on women and different structural and cultural forms of violence. In
the research forum, Susan Neighbour discusses aspects of her recently
completed Master of Social Work thesis on sexual assault workers'
experiences of working with people with multiplicity.
We see this journal as playing a significant role in providing an
opportunity for women practitioners, students and academics to publish
in a refereed journal. All articles are reviewed by two or more
independent referees and usually require some additional work before
being finally accepted for publication. So far most contributors have
tended to be academics. As we are keen to have more articles from
students and practitioners we would like you to encourage your
colleagues to contribute to future editions.
This journal sits within the context of international women's
networking, such as the Women's Interest Group of the International
Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW). This group meets every
two years at the Joint World Congress of IASSW and the IFSW (the
International Federation of Social Work). A Women's Symposium was
held in Israel in July 1998. The publication from the previous
Women's Interest Group Symposium in 1996 in Hong Kong is now
available (see enclosed information). The next Symposium will be in
Montreal in the year 2000.
This edition of the WIWE Journal is dedicated to the memory of
Helen La Nauze who was an active participant in WIWE Conferences and a
contributor to an earlier WIWE Journal. An obituary is included in this
journal. In writing this journal we are also reminded of other women
colleagues who have died tragically and prematurely, including Yvonne
Taylor Cullen, Helen Marchant, Nancy Gumprecht, Brenda Smith and Shirley
Gilliver.
We would like to thank our women colleagues who have reviewed
articles as well as women who have contributed articles to this edition.
Finally we would like to thank AASWWE for their financial contribution
which ensures funding for two editions of the journal.
