Editorial.

Almost two years ago now, the first edition of this journal was
launched at the WIWE Conference in Perth. That was a very memorable
occasion and we want to thank the Perth women for making it so special.
At the conference, we, the editors, also had the opportunity to share
our experiences of the process of putting a journal together. The
response to this was very positive. Hopefully such information will be
encouraging to others who would like to organise editorial committees
for future special editions, for example on field education, violence
against women. If you are interested in forming a special issue
editorial committee please contact us--we will be happy to be involved
in any ongoing consultation for such a project.
The events in Perth inspired the editorial committee to get on with
the job of producing this second issue of the WIWE Journal. While we
have learnt a lot from our first effort and had hoped to get an issue
out each year, the process of trying to get contributions, the lengthy
process of reviewing articles, editing, and production with limited
resources, has resulted in the second issue coming out almost two years
after the first. Perhaps 18 months to 2 years is a more realistic time
line. However, if we can get enough contributions over a shorter period
we may be able to have a reduced turn around time. In regard to this
last point we would like to urge you all to write and encourage other
women colleagues/students to write as well. We want this journal to be a
place to celebrate women's writing.
We are also looking for people interested in reviewing articles for
future journals from here and overseas. In relation to the latter we are
hoping to get overseas contributions for articles as well and will be
publicising the Journal at the International Association of Schools of
Social Work Pre-Congress Women's Symposium (IASSW) in July in Hong
Kong. Two members of the WIWE Editorial Committee are also involved in
the organisation of this Women's Symposium. The WIWE Journal will
be the co-sponsor of the refereed papers from this Symposium. In terms
of international networking the other members of the WIWE Editorial
Committee were two of several social work educators who participated at
the Women's Conference in Beijing in 1995.
This issue covers wide ranging issues concerned with such topics
as: social work ethics; violence against women and children; activism;
mothers who are marginalised on the basis of their disability; field
education and community development. There is also a research forum, an
expanded book reviews section (that we hope will become a regular
feature), and news from schools/departments in nearly all states.
We look forward to the debate that these articles will generate and
we hope you will find them interesting and stimulating.
Finally, to all those who have been reviewers and contributors for
this journal, thank you.
