Dear readers.
Mantei, Jessica ; Kervin , Lisa ; Latham, Gloria 等
Gloria Latham Jessica Mantei Lisa Kervin Welcome to the October
edition of Practically Primary, fresh from the ALEA/AATE conference in
Perth. How lovely it was to meet so many people keen not only to chat
about Practically Primary but to write as well!
In this edition, we focus on the ways teachers work with texts. Dr
Beryl Exley, our Queensland Director opens the conversation with a
feature article exploring 'edgy' texts. Beryl uses
Browne's Piggybook and My Place in Space by Robin and Sally Hirst
to examine the potential for teachers to use powerful narrative texts
beyond the social purpose of entertainment. We thank Beryl for her
analysis and insight as we consider the role of literature in our
teaching.
10 Things is enriched this month by the perspectives of Literacy
Coaches working across many classrooms. They have gathered the opinions
and practices of a range of teachers and reported on their schools'
ways of working with texts. This edition also sees the dissemination of
findings from research funded by the ALEA Research Grant. The teachers
from Curl Curl Primary School and their academic partner, Prof Robyn
Ewing share their experiences of improving literacy pedagogy and
outcomes through teaching imaginatively. We hope the stories shared in
Working with Texts will inspire you in your teaching and encourage you
to share your own story in Practically Primary.
Enjoy,
Jessica, Lisa and Gloria
