Dear Readers:
Story-telling
The June edition of Practically Primary has as its theme 'The
stories we tell'. We are storied beings who are nourished daily by
doses of dreams, jokes, gossip, recounts of experiences, memories and of
literature heard and viewed and felt in public and private spaces. We
mark the milestones in our lives with stories. They provide us with a
sense of ourselves and our place in the world. They also bind us to
others. Pivotal stories are passed on and remembered. As teachers we
must learn to select, craft and share the right story at the right time
for the right audience. We must also get our students to share stories.
The contributors to this edition approach storytelling from a range
of perspectives; from the tellers to the listeners /observers and the
wonderers. Among the stories shared are digital stories, visual
narratives, stories dramatized, the art of telling stories, and how
factual accounts construct our knowledge of the world. There are also
articles about other literacy practices.
I hope you will enjoy dipping into these stories and think about
how your classrooms can be filled with rich storytelling opportunities.
Jessica, Lisa and I welcome your contribution to future editions of
Practically Primary. Share the stories from your classrooms, critical
moments in teaching and learning, small moments, action research
studies, new strategies ... We would love to hear from you.
