Evaluation of health services and preventive efforts provided to control heroin and morphine abuse (Case study: Khartoum State).

This study aimed at evaluating the health services and preventive efforts provided to control Heroin and Morphine abuse.

The study was conducted in Khartoum State and the target groups included the officials from different authorized departments, Hospital Pharmacists, Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Social Services Specialists.

Some of the important results obtained, included:

-- The health workers provided supportive, psychological and family therapy.

-- Crucial services such as suitable treatment environment and rehabilitation centers with well qualified staff are lacking.

-- Detoxification drugs are not available.

-- There is no cooperation between those offering treatment and police authorities.

-- Facilities for control of drugs influx and drugs abuse are not adequate; those include lack of certain essential laboratory equipments and insufficient financial resources.

-- Lack of police follow--up and surveillance after treatment result in patient's relapse.

-- The study suggested some recommendations which included: Improvement of control procedures among the different health and preventive sectors; at least to mimic the international standards of control measures for Heroin and Morphine abuse. Provide all needed detoxification drugs, rehabilitation centers and sustaining awareness programs about the hazards of drugs abuse.
