AIATSIS National Indigenous Studies Conference.
The 2009 National Indigenous Studies Conference was held from 29
September to 1 October at the ANU, on the theme 'Perspectives on
Urban Life: Connections and reconnections', with tours and
workshops on the pre- and proceedings days. The conference attracted
about 540 delegates, with representation from more than 160
organisations. International speakers travelled from Canada and New
Zealand, providing an opportunity to learn about similar issues for
urban-based Indigenous people in these countries. More than 220 speakers
presented on a variety of themes, including: Health; Housing; Identity;
Education; Culture and Heritage; Language; Community Partnerships;
Representation and Cultural Expression; Demography; and Urban Histories.
The number and quality of the presentations contributed to the success
of the conference, as did the varied non-academic program, such as the
ACT premier of Rachel Perkins' much anticipated new film Bran Nue
Dae. Increasing the accessibility of the conference, the AIATSIS website
will house audio and video recordings, as well as the PowerPoint
presentations, for most of the presentations. Publications from the
conference are planned for 2010/11.
