New EU copyright regulations.
Warmerdan, Ria
The European Parliament initiated new copyright regulations. An
important element is that copyright owners of music receive royalties
for online use of their music. Terms dictate that royalties are to be
paid within nine months after streaming (downloading, etc.). Another
advantage of the new regulations is that online music companies (such as
Deezer and Spotify) can now apply for an EU-wide license for offering
streaming music. Up to now a license had to be requested for each
individual country. Musicians now can make copyright arrangements of
their music online themselves. For The Netherlands, this means
Buma/Stemra (the royalty bureau of the Netherlands) is a little less
almighty. Up to now, copyright managing was a sort of all-in-one package
to be purchased at Buma/Stemra. Buma/Stemra used to collect both the
copyright fees from broadcasting, as well as the revenues from online
services. Buma/Stemra have agreed to give the copyright owners more
freedom of choice. This will lead to more entrepreneur opportunities for
composers and lyricists which will benefit music consumers.
