Commission on Service and Training.
Gottlieb, Jane
The Commission on Service and Training presented one session at the
2015 IAML-IMS conference in New York, on Tuesday, 23 June. Its theme of
Music Information Literacy was both a continuation of the session
presented on 14 July in Antwerp (Information Literacy and the Music
Library), as well as an opportunity to offer new perspectives in this
theme in light of the 2015 program theme Music Research in the Digital
Age. More than 50 people were in attendance.
Kirstin Dougan's paper "Searching for Music in the
Digital Age" shared the results of her observational study of some
80 students at her university (University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign), who were asked to search for scores and sound
recordings in their on-line catalog without any guidance from a
librarian. Such a study provides valuable data to the library staff in
how best to instruct students, as well as how we might build better
search tools for our catalogs.
Bonnie Elizabeth Fleming's paper "Incorporating Digital
Primary Resources to Enhance Music Information Literacy Training"
demonstrated how use of digital images of manuscripts and early editions
in information literacy sessions greatly enhanced students'
engagement and levels of comprehension. Ms. Fleming is a member of the
library staff of Oklahoma City University.
Lastly, Carolyn Doi (University of Saskatchewan) presented her
insights on "Delivery of Music Research Methods through a Flipped
Classroom Lens: Enhancing Library Instruction in a Digital Learning
Environment." She offered background on just how a "flipped
classroom" works, as well as examples of how she used this format
in her own music research methods class.
I would like to thank outgoing chair Geoff Thomason for generously
sharing advice and guidance with the new chair, as this is her first
year in this role.
