A survey on the role of Gambian women in the Jahali-Pacharr small holder rice irrigation scheme.
Kidwaro, Fanson
This study investigates the role of rural women in the World
Bank/International Fund For Agriculture Development (IFAD)/Gambia
Government sponsored integrated rice irrigation project in the
Jahali-Pacharr area of the Macarthy Island Division (Gambia). The
purpose of the study was to find out: (1) The attitude of the farm
family units towards accepting and adopting new methods/practices of
rice cultivation through irrigation; (2) The successes and failures on
the part of development experts to accommodate the sentiments of rural
women in their plans; (3) The division of labor in this new method of
farming; and (4) The impact of the project on the already existing land
tenure system. Ten men and ten women representatives from each of the
five villages (100 total) in the project area participated in answering
a questionnaire during the survey. The survey results revealed that
women provided most of the labor inputs and have little or no training
that can help improve their skills and overall development.
