Characterization of prairie recovery from cedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) Invasion.
Chevalier, Cary
Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) often invades prairie
in the absence of fire. Removal of cedar is an initial step in prairie
restoration. The plant community that colonizes the areas formerly
suppressed by cedar tends to be different from adjacent prairie. Three
prairies with recent cedar removals were sampled in summer 2004. Canopy
coverage was different between cedar recovery plots and adjacent
prairie. In addition, species richness, species diversity, coefficient
of conservatism, % annual species, and % woody species were used to
describe the two community differences.
