Charles George Mayer, age 89, former staff member at
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and retired teacher at Bethel High
School, Tipp City, OH, died 11 May 2007. He established the Hilda
Dierker Scholarship Fund at The Ohio State University to provide
scholarships for music students interested in pursuing careers in public
music education. Mayer joined The Ohio Academy of Science (1966),
affiliated with the section on science education, and was accorded
emeritus status (1983).
Born 19April 1918 in Columbus, OH, Mayer was the son of Carl F. Jr
and Lydia Ann (Dierker) Mayer. After receiving his high school diploma,
he entered The Ohio State University, where he earned a B.S. in
education (June 1940) and an M.A. (August 1947). His thesis was titled
"A Study of Certain Arts and Crafts of Old Mexico to Determine
Their Implications for Industrial Arts Education." He worked at
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and was an industrial arts teacher at
Bethel High School. He was a life member of The Ohio State University
Alumni Association.
Surviving Mayer are a brother, Robert Mayer (Alice) of Oakland, CA;
nephews, Kirk Mayer and Keith Mayer; a niece, Kathy Mayer, all of
California. Funeral services were held at the Trostel, Chapman, Dunbar
& Fraley Funeral Home, New Carlisle, OH. Burial took place at New
Carlisle Cemetery.
