Yap is an island within the Federated States of Micronesia. In
2004, Typhoon Sudal destroyed much of the island's infrastructure,
including the public library and the hospital library.
A philanthropic organisation assisted with the hospital library
rebuilding and outfitting, while IFLA, through Secretary General Peter
Lor and energetic librarian Arlene Cohen from the University of Guam,
went about seeking assistance for the public library. Approaches were
made to regional national libraries to assist the rebuilding effort. The
National Library of Australia donated $15 000 to the appeal.
The library is now operating again in a new building, with the
National Library of Australia's contribution paying for a computer,
printer and photocopier as well as some books and shelving.
