Things That Refuse to Change At 70--it sounds like a decent round of golf-- whenever I long for things immutable, naturally I go back to the 50s and to the rich, affable, round-bellied Mr. Bartlett and his tee shot, every Sunday for two summers, on the last par five of the flat second nine of the Sioux City Country Club. I should know--I was his steady caddy. I can tell you his Titleist 3 landed, Sunday after Sunday, within a bushel basket of the 150-yard marker. I could've closed my eyes during his swing and kept them closed while walking to the ball. I can tell you a few more things that refused to change, Sunday after Sunday: the sound of spikes clicking on the spike-pocked sidewalk outside the clubhouse after a round; the manly small talk; Mr. Bartlett's generous dollar tip, and his warm "See you next Sunday, kid."
