摘要:The traditional gene ral procurement route found in many hous ing projects in Malaysia isconceptualized as a governance structure following the transaction cost economics (TeE) ap proach. This approach has been used to examine gove rnance structures in different economic sectors insevera l countries but evidence of its use in the context of developing countries is limited. This lackof evidence has prompted the authors to cond uct a preliminary study to ascertain whet her a TeEapproach can explain cons truction govern ance structu res in de veloping countries. This researchdoes not di scuss the trade-off that gove rns the choice of hybrids, market or hierarchies for organizingtran sactions. Rather, it takes advantage of existing research to substantiate the specific proper tiesof hybrid orga nizations as governance structures. The main focus is coordination. Coordina tion isspeci fied at two levels. At Levell is the coordination of specia lization (i.e. the forma tion of theproject team members) and at Level 2 is the coordina tion mode of the contracting pa rties (client andcontracto r) and the agents involv ed (the lead designer and project manage r).A case su rvey methodwas adopted. Preliminary findings seem to suggest that clients have used hierarchical themes in thecontracts and high powered incentives to coord inate with in the contracting parties. The resea rchfindings suggest that all participants involv ed in the sample studied used governance struct uressymptomatic of a hybrid organi zation
