摘要：Tra le strutture del paesaggio, forse le strade sono quelle che più di altre evocano la dimensione del tempo, perché lungo di esse si sono allineati per secoli spazi e strutture dell’insediamento militare, religioso, civile e produttivo. Questa è la ragione per cui l’attenzione degli studiosi si è spesso concentrata sugli aspetti della continuità della rete stradale romana nel tempo. Se tuttavia, in tale prospettiva tematica, consideriamo in modo obiettivo la quantità e la qualità dei dati che ci sono pervenuti, dobbiamo ammettere che spesso del tessuto viario sono rimaste tracce discontinue e difficilmente disambiguabili. Questo contributo propone quindi alcune riflessioni sull’approccio comunemente praticato agli studi sull’evoluzione della rete stradale nel tempo, sul modo stesso di utilizzare le fonti e di valutarne le loro caratteristiche (peso testimoniale, collocazione nel tempo e nello spazio delle informazioni che contengono) e sulle problematiche connesse all’implementazione di dati fortemente eterogenei ai fini della costruzione di un discorso storico. Maybe the ancient roads, more than other landscape structures, suggest the idea of the past, because they have always attracted spaces and structures of the military, religious, civil and productive settlement. For this reason, the scholars' attention is often focused on the aspects of the continuity of the Roman road network over time. However, if we consider objectively the quantity and quality of the data we have at our disposal, we see that they often consist of discontinuous and rather ambiguous traces. This paper offers some reflections on the approach commonly practised in the researches on the evolution of the road network over time, on the way the sources are used and evaluated in order to their depth and in order to the position in time and space of the information they contain, and finally on the problems arising from the implementation of highly heterogeneous data.
